Toothlens

Overview

Toothlens was an early-stage healthcare technology initiative focused on improving dental screening and patient management through digital workflows.

The goal was to build an MVP capable of managing patient records, supporting dental assessments, and exploring AI-assisted detection of conditions such as tartar buildup and cavities.

I joined the project as a Software Consultant and worked with a small engineering team to design and deliver the initial product foundation.

The Challenge

Dental practices often rely on disconnected systems for patient records, treatment tracking, insurance management, and diagnostic workflows.

The objective was to validate whether a modern digital platform could streamline these processes while maintaining healthcare compliance requirements.

The solution also needed to accommodate future AI-driven analysis capabilities and support mobile-first patient experiences.

Key considerations included:

  • HIPAA-compliant data handling.
  • Patient record management.
  • Dental screening workflows.
  • Insurance-related processes.
  • Mobile accessibility.
  • Rapid MVP delivery.

The Solution

The team adopted an MVP-first approach focused on validating the product concept before significant investment in scaling.

The initial implementation included:

  • Patient management workflows.
  • Dental assessment and tracking capabilities.
  • HIPAA-conscious architecture decisions.
  • Insurance workflow exploration and proof-of-concept development.
  • Mobile and web experiences for healthcare providers.

The project initially explored a web-first approach using Progressive Web App (PWA) technologies before evolving toward a React Native-based mobile strategy.

Technical Challenges

Healthcare Compliance

Patient information required careful handling and consideration of HIPAA-related requirements during system design and implementation.

Product Validation

The project needed to move quickly while still validating complex healthcare workflows and business assumptions.

Mobile Strategy

The product evolved from a web-first approach toward a React Native application as the team refined its understanding of user needs and product direction.

Technologies Used

  • React Native
  • Progressive Web Apps (PWA)
  • JavaScript
  • Healthcare Data Workflows
  • MVP Architecture

Outcome

Within a few months, the team successfully delivered the initial MVP and proof-of-concept solutions needed to validate the product direction.

The work helped establish the technical and business foundations for the next stage of the platform's evolution, after which the client expanded the team and continued product development internally.

My Role

As part of a small engineering team, I contributed to: MVP architecture and planning. Application development across web and mobile experiences. Patient management workflows. HIPAA-focused implementation considerations. Insurance workflow strategy and proof-of-concept development. Technical decision making during the product validation phase.
