BotRocket - Transforming RPA Services into a Scalable Automation Platform
Overview
Terobots was an automation-focused company helping enterprises streamline repetitive business processes using Robotic Process Automation (RPA) technologies.
Their clients included large organizations that relied on automation workflows for document processing, purchase order management, data extraction, and other operational tasks. Many of these workflows leveraged technologies such as Google Vision and Power Automate to automate previously manual processes.
As the business grew, managing automation deployments, monitoring execution, tracking usage, and billing clients became increasingly difficult.
I joined the project as a Software Consultant to design and build BotRocket, a centralized platform that enabled Terobots to deploy, monitor, manage, and monetize automation workflows at scale.
The Challenge
Terobots had successfully built automation solutions for enterprise clients, but operational management was becoming a bottleneck.
The team faced several challenges:
- Automation scripts were difficult to deploy consistently across client environments.
- There was limited visibility into job execution and runtime behavior.
- Tracking failures and operational issues required manual effort.
- Client billing was difficult because automation usage was not being measured centrally.
- Monitoring and reporting capabilities were fragmented across multiple systems.
As client adoption increased, the company needed a platform that could provide operational visibility and business scalability.
The Solution
To address these challenges, I architected and led the development of BotRocket, a centralized automation management platform.
The platform enabled Terobots to:
- Deploy automation workflows through a unified interface.
- Monitor running automation jobs.
- Track execution history and runtime metrics.
- Capture logs, failures, and operational events.
- Generate usage insights and analytics.
- Calculate customer billing based on automation execution and usage.
- Manage automation assets from a single platform.
Rather than treating each automation as an isolated project, BotRocket transformed automation workflows into manageable, measurable, and scalable business assets.
Technical Challenges
Automation Deployment Management
Automation scripts were running across different client environments, making deployment consistency an ongoing challenge.
The platform needed a reliable mechanism for distributing, managing, and tracking automation assets across multiple installations.
Monitoring & Observability
One of the most important requirements was providing operational visibility into automation execution.
The system needed to answer questions such as:
- Which jobs are currently running?
- Which automations failed?
- What caused the failure?
- How much time did each automation consume?
This required centralized logging, monitoring, and event tracking capabilities.
Usage-Based Billing
The company wanted to move beyond manual billing processes and charge customers based on actual automation usage.
This required implementing tracking mechanisms capable of measuring execution activity and translating operational metrics into billable usage.
Enterprise Integrations
Several automation workflows relied on external systems and services, including:
- Google Vision
- Microsoft Power Automate
- Enterprise document processing workflows
The platform needed to integrate seamlessly with these technologies while maintaining a consistent operational experience.
Technologies Used
- Angular
- NestJS
- Azure
- Redis
- Google Vision
- Microsoft Power Automate
- REST APIs
- Logging & Monitoring Systems
- Usage Analytics
Outcome
BotRocket provided Terobots with a centralized platform for managing automation operations across multiple enterprise clients.
The platform transformed a collection of independent automation scripts into a scalable operational system capable of:
- Managing automation deployments.
- Monitoring execution health.
- Tracking usage metrics.
- Supporting customer billing workflows.
- Providing operational visibility across automation assets.
Beyond solving immediate business challenges, the platform established a foundation that enabled the company to scale automation delivery more effectively while improving reliability, observability, and operational control.
My Role
As the lead consultant and solution architect, I was responsible for: * Defining the product architecture. * Designing the platform's deployment and monitoring workflows. * Leading a small engineering team of two developers. * Building core platform functionality. * Designing backend services and APIs. * Implementing integrations with automation and document-processing tools. * Establishing deployment and operational infrastructure on Azure. I worked across both frontend and backend systems while helping shape the overall product direction with the founder.
